Why some woman self-harm when rejected?

my gf has a habit of self-harm..she is divorced....whenever we have a fight she cuts her hand so much so that she needs to see a dcotor....is it an indication of overwhelming emotion and love for me or something else...? why do more women than men has the habit of self-harm...?
